God's plan for Moses

EXODUS 2 VERSES 16 - 25

We have so much in common with this man Moses - we seen last week how his focus changed from that of an Egyptian prince with his eye on the throne to that of a poor Israelite slave.  Then we see how his future changed to it now being in the hands of God.  Then we moved on to see his failure, trying to do God's work in his own way.  Then Moses had to flee from Egypt.  He had killed the Egyptian and news came back that he had been seen doing that.  Pharaoh declared he should be put to death for this action.

What about our focus today?  Has our focus changed from the day we accepted Christ as Saviour?  You would have had your eye on what this life had to offer you, everything was going the way you planned it but when you were saved did it bring a change in your life?  "If any man be in Christ he is a new creature, old things are passed away; behold all things are become new." (2 Corinthians 5 verse 17)  Is there still a desire for the old pleasures?  Somehow you cannot break from the past.  Our focus should be on the things of God - prayer, bible study, fellowship, spreading the word of God, seeing men and women saved.  If that is your focus then it certainly has been changed.  Then we see our failures - we do have failures, each of us fail from time to time.  Paul tells us "wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall." (1 Corinthians 10 verse 12)  It is possible to get to the stage where we say we are almost perfect - are we were Moses was at?  In the wilderness, a barren, dry land and he was so alone.  No-one understands.  No-one cares.  No-one wants to be in your shoes today.

Let's look at God's plan for Moses - firstly his escape.  He is taken out into the wilderness, to the land of Midian.  It was a barren place, little by way of company there.  He was there because of his failure and fear of what man would do to him.  He had the death sentence on him by Pharaoh.  He reflects as he walks from God's plan and purpose.  God's plan was to deliver the people out of hard bondage in Egypt, to take them into the place God planned for them.  Now fear has set in to his heart.  Perhaps he felt he had let God down.  The only thing on his mind is to get away from the vengeance of Pharaoh.  Is it possible that we have been put off because of what someone has said to us, that has hurt us, set us back.  We never thought they would say that.  Maybe it was said behind your back and you have heard it.  Now you are fleeing, walking away from what God would have you to do.  A barren place, a wilderness, no fellowship.  Think of Elijah the prophet of God.  One minute he is standing before Ahab pronouncing the word of God, then he is on Mount Carmel winning the victory over the prophets of Baal.  Suddenly Jezebel decrees that she would put him to death.  What was Elijah's response?  He fled to the desert.

His encounter.  Moses comes to the land of Midian and he sits down by a well.  He is weary from his journey.  The daughters of the priest of Midian came by.  God makes no mistakes.  He always brings those around us who will help us.  Remember when Moses as a baby was put into the basket and set on the river - at the exact place where Pharaoh's daughter would come down to wash?  This well is a place of refreshment.  God brings Moses to this exact place.  Then we see the people he encounters.  The Midianites were relatives of Abraham.  People to help him.  Remember Paul in the city of Corinth.  A sinful, immoral city but there Paul met Priscilla and Aquilla, people to help him in the work of God.  God wouldn't leave Moses alone.  God will never leave us alone today.  He has not given up on you.  God will bring people around you.  These young women, the daughters of Jethro, 7 in all, brought their flocks to the well.  Normally what would happen is that if a male shepherd came at the same time they would drive the women's flocks back but on this occasion Moses stood up for the women, driving out the Arab shepherds.  We all have to start somewhere.  Think of Elisha the prophet.  In 2 Kings 3 we read the story of Jehoshaphat and Jehoram.  Jehoram asked Jehoshaphat to go with him into battle against Moab.  It was a critical situation and needed divine help.  Jehoshaphat asked "is there not here a prophet of the Lord that we may inquire of the Lord by him?"  He was not going to do battle until he first got word from the Lord.  Have we spent time with God today, asking him for a word from himself?  Jehoshaphat wanted guidance and we too need guidance today.  We are facing situations today that we have never faced before - physically, mentally and emotionally.  One of the king's servants answered and said "Here is Elisha the son of Shaphat which poured water on the hands of Elijah."  Such was the respect for Elisha.  This servant knew he would have words from God.  But notice where he had started from - pouring water on the hands of Elijah.  A menial task.  Think of Samuel before he was established as a prophet of the Lord.  He lay on his bed one night as a child.  God told him what would happen in the future but the next morning he got up and opened the doors to the temple.  A menial task that God had given him.  Are you running from the task God has given you today?

His enterprise - verses 18 - 20 "and Moses was content to dwell with the man."  He was content to become a shepherd.  Moses was brought up to think shepherds were an abomination.  "I have learned in whasoever state I am, therewith to be content." (Philippians 4 verse 11)  From the prince of Egypt to a shepherd in Midian.  Moses was going to knuckle down and do it with all his heart.  Are we prepared to take on a role God would give us even thought we think it might be beneath us?  Jonah was told to the Ninevites and preach the gospel but he wouldn't do it.  He felt they didn't deserve the message.  Mark turned his back on Barnabas and Paul.  It wasn't what he wanted to do.  Are you working hard at what God has given you to do today?  Paul could say "I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek." (Romans 1 verse 16)  Remember the parable of the man who went into the far country.  Before he left he gave his servants talents - to one he gave 5, to another 2 and to a third 1 talent.  When he returned he brought his servants together one day and asked them what they had done with the talents given to them.  The first servant who had 5 talents told him he had doubled it to 10 and likewise the servant with 2 had doubled his to 4.  The servant who had been given 1 talent had hid his talent in the ground.  He dug it up and brought it back to his master.  He was condemned for his actions.  What a picture of Christ - he is the master who will one day come back and ask us what we did with what he has given each of us.  Are you serving the Lord today?

His endurance.  Moses in the wilderness as a shepherd felt the heat of the midday sun when there was no shade for him.  He was lonely, his heart was breaking, he was working with stubborn sheep.  A daily routine.  Moses was being prepared for a time when he would lead the children of Israel in the wilderness.  This was a test of endurance.  For 40 years he endured the task given to him.  Maybe we think we would rather be doing something else.  We started well with the task given to us but are now fed up.  Perhaps have even given up on it.  Sometimes we need to stick at it.  We need endurance.  Moses learned that lesson.  He would have to work hard at it.  Paul preaching at Philippi was cast into a prison cell.  Corrie Ten Boom during the second world war said to God "place me in whatever way you wish even if it means hardship or solitude."  Shortly after that her dad died and she was separated from her sister.  She was thrown into a dark damp cell.  Corrie is crying, the tears are running down her cheeks.  She whispers to God "I didn't mean I wanted to be alone."  That is the lesson we learn in the wilderness.  Where are you with God today?  Walking away from God?  Or are you still serving him?  Are you just going through the motions today?  Come again to Christ, let him bring you back to what he has for you.

Seek ye the Lord while he may be found

LIMAVADY INDEPENDENT METHODIST CHURCH

SUNDAY 23 AUGUST 2020 PM

ISAIAH 55 VERSES 1 - 7

"Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near."

We have an opportunity tonight to call on the name of the Lord because he is near.  There may come a time when he will not be near.  "My Spirit shall not always strive with man."  Revelation 3 verse 20 "Behold I stand at the door and knock, if any man hear my voice and open the door I will come in."  Maybe the Lord has been knocking on your heart`s door over these past days, weeks, months and years and you have never responded, never repented of your sin, trusted him as Saviour and Lord.  He comes again, he is to be found tonight.  He is here tonight to seek and to save that which is lost.

A search that is precious.  This text tells me we are not signing up to a church or a book of rules.  It is telling us to come, to seek after a person, none other than Jesus himself.  1 Peter 2 verse 7 "unto you therefore which believe he is precious."  If you are saved and walking with God then he is precious to you because he left heavens glory, you were on his mind.  He left the praise of angels, came into this sin cursed world and on the cross of Calvary he died for you.  To you he is precious.  Peter said he is to be found.  Think of the man we read about in Matthew 13.   A parable about a man passing a piece of land.  One day he realised there was something about this piece of land that was very precious.  He hadn`t realised it before.  Hidden treasure in the field.  We are not told how often he passed that piece of ground or how often he did it.  He didn`t realise how precious it was.  One day he passed by, looked at it then went out and sold all he had to buy this field.  He was not like the young man who came to the Lord.  He realised he was not saved, still in his sin.  He asked Jesus "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"  The Lord spoke of the commandments to which he replied "all these I have kept from my youth up."  Jesus said "take all you have, sell it and give to the poor then come and follow me."  He couldn`t go through with God.  He neglected to see the preciousness of God`s salvation.  Have you neglected to look on the preciousness of God`s salvation?  You have been pointed to the cross.  Jesus suffered and died for you yet somehow you have turned your back time after time.  This verse speaks of Christ tonight.  The God of this world has blinded our eyes so we cannot see the preciousness of Christ.  If this man had this field he would have all he needed for the rest of his life.  If only we could see Christ who came into this world to save our souls.  If only you could see the preciousness of Christ you would have something greater than the wealth of this world.

It is also a personal search.  Notice the word "ye".  The word of instruction is to be applied individually.  Look at verse 1 "Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy and eat, yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without price."  In poverty and hunger we should come.  It is personal to you and you alone.  Paul before Agrippa told how he was on his way to Damascus when God spoke to him.  He thought he was doing God a favour.  He had a licence in his hand to go to Damascus, that if he found anyone who followed Christ, he had the power to bind them and bring them back to Jerusalem.  There on the road to Damascus he met Christ personally.  In the dust of that road he heard a voice asking him "why persecutest thou me?"  Agrippa turned to Paul and said "almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian."  Sadly he stopped in his tracks and did not take that step.  Almost persuaded but that is as far as he went.  He was taking it personally on that particular day.  He was not thinking of Festus standing beside him or the counsellors in the chamber listening to their conversation.  Maybe God has been speaking to you and you have been almost persuaded?  Paul could do nothing more for Agrippa.  He could show him Christ suffering and dying for him but he could do nothing more.  The knowledge of my thirst will not suffice for yours.  The Psalmist could say "O taste and see that the Lord is good."

It is a positive search.  The promise is to all who search that they will find.  If you search for the Lord you will find him.  That is the promise for the genuine seeker.  Jeremiah "ye shall seek me and find me when ye search for me with all your heart."  The man in Matthew 13 saw something precious and he was willing to sell all to have that field.  When you look to Christ there is nothing you can purchase, it is a free gift offered to everyone.  "The Son of Man is come to seek and to save that which is lost."  The disciples looked at the young man who turned from Christ because he was told to sell all he had and give it away.  The disciples asked Jesus "who then can be saved?"  Paul said "for whosoever shall on the name of the Lord shall be saved."

A pressing search.  There is a danger here.  It is a pressing search and we cannot delay - "while he may be found" and "while he is near".  Remember Joseph and Mary when they took Jesus to the temple at 12 years of age.  Mary and Joseph returned home.  Both thought Jesus was with each other but he wasn`t with either.  He had remained in Jerusalem.  They returned to the temple and there he was with the lawyers debating with them.  Is it possible tonight that you think you are saved, that you think the Lord is with you and maybe he is not with you?  The bible says "now is the accepted day, now is the day of salvation".  If the Lord is calling to you will you come?  If the Holy Spirit is showing you your need of salvation call upon him tonight.  You can turn to the Lord, invite him into your life.  Song of Solomon 5 verse 6 "I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone; my soul failed when he spake; I sought him but I could not find him, I called him but he gave me no answer."  The gospel is for you, for you to come.  A pardon is offered to you for your sin but you must receive it.  To reject it means no pardon.  In the days of Lot living in Sodom the angels went down to deliver him and his family.  The angels told them not to look back - are you prepared to come and seek the Lord, to turn from your sin and not look back?

A profitable search.  Just as the man found treasure in the field so too you will find Christ and he will be sufficient for you.  Will you seek and find the Lord while he may be found?

SERMON NOTES FROM SUNDAY 23 AUGUST 2020 AM

EXODUS 2 VERSES 11 - 15

We are coming back to the life of Moses, something we began last Sunday morning.  We thought about his passion for the work of God.  God was commissioning him to go back to Egypt and bring the Children of Israel out to a land he promised them.  The encounter God had with Moses that changed the course of his life.  We need that meeting with God that would change the course of our lives in these days.  The Children of Israel were enslaved in Egypt.  A new king had arose "that knew not Joseph".  Moses would be the man to stand before Pharaoh to ask to let the people go.  Pharaoh asked who would be leaving and Moses told him - our young and old men and women, our sons and our daughters, our flocks and herds all would come out (Exodus 10 verse 9).  Acts 7 verse 20 "in which time Moses was born."  We thought last week "cometh the hour, cometh the man."  Let us look again at the life of Moses.

The focus of Moses.  We know that when he was born a decree had gone out that all the Israelite male children when born were to be put into the river.  There was great persecution at that time.  Into this situation Moses was born.  Some times we get saved and comfortable, we go through the routine of prayer, reading our bibles - we are saved and comfortable.  Never anything happens in our lives.  Moses was born for this particular period just as Esther was for the moment in which she lived.  Has God changed you?  Set you on a course and are you following on that course?  Are you following after him today?  Moses was hidden for 3 months then carefully placed in a basket.  It was a plan devised by his father and mother.  They couldn`t hide him any longer.  The basket was set in the river.  God was in control.  God is in control of our lives today.  Looking at this virus sweeping the world sometimes we forget God is in control.  We must follow the law of the land.  We have to be careful to follow God too.  He knows the beginning and the end of the virus.  Moses` mother lets the basket float off to the very place where Pharaoh`s daughter would come to bathe at.  What a privilege that was for this young Jewish boy.  Miriam was watching all that was happening.  She jumped up and asked Pharaoh`s daughter if she needed a nurse.  Moses` mother was given the job of bringing him up.  She taught him all the things of God, how he was the creator God, she taught him the fundamentals of his faith.  Even when he took a stand for himself in Pharaoh`s house he was able to do so because of the teaching his mother had given him.  We want the same today for our children but we need to show them the way of salvation that they know in whom they are believing is able to keep their trust.  Have you taught your children today the things of God?  What a privilege to be brought up in the house of Pharaoh with all the education behind him harnessed to the things of God.  He would have been in the second chariot riding behind Pharaoh, enjoying everything Egypt had to give him.  The focus shifts when God came to him and tells him he has a task for him.  Just like the maid in Naaman`s house.  He shows the great plan he had for him.  The plans God had for his life.  Verse 11 "when Moses was grown".  Stephen in Acts 7 tells us he was 40 years by now.  "He looked on their burdens"  His eyes are now focused not on the wealth he has in Egypt, he is thinking instead of God`s people and their cries.  What is happening - his focus is now on the things of God.  Acts 7 verse 25 "he thought they would have realised but they understood not."  When Nehemiah went up to Jerusalem it says he had the "welfare of the people on his heart."  Nehemiah 2 verse 18.

Notice the future of Moses.  His focus was changing but his future was also changing.  Hebrews 11 "he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh`s daughter".  Facing the future and knowing God has spoken to him about his future.  He knew the calling was on him.  Weighing up the cost.  Pharaoh`s advisors are telling him what would happen in his life but Moses turns his back on it all.  The position he was looking to, the pleasures enjoying every day, the power that would be his.  That he might receive the prize of the high calling of God.  He turned his back on sin.  The Lord himself when he was in the wilderness, the devil came to him, he was hungry, the devil said "turn these stones into bread."  The Lord said it wouldn`t happen.  Then he took him up to the high spire of the temple and told to cast himself down but he would not do it.  Then Satan showed him the kingdoms of the earth "all these will I give you" but the Lord turned his back on him.  Have we turned our back on the world?  We want to enjoy God`s salvation but don`t want it to cost too much.  God`s salvation calls for a mark of separation.  "Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you." (2 Corinthians 6 verse 17)  Are we running after the pleasures of this earth?  Wouldn`'t it be awful to lose out on the high calling of God, to be lost in a Christless hell for all eternity because we couldn`'t let go of the pleasure we enjoy at present?

Notice Moses` failure.  God had called him to deliver the people out of bondage.  One day Moses went out to visit his people - verse 11 "he looked on their burdens."  He had so much sympathy, could see their difficulties and had compassion for them.  A little further he saw an Egyptian fighting with a Hebrew slave.  Moses stepped in to separate them.  Verse 12 tells us he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.  Are we standing up for our faith today?  Are we taking a back seat?  Are we keeping the standard of holy living today?  We are to "contend for the faith" today (Jude 1 verse 3).  Perhaps that means sitting in our church car park rather than in the house of God.  This is what we are, this is who we are, this is what we are standing for - to win that crown.  Paul tells us we must fight well and follow the rules.  He told Timothy "you should be an example" before the brethren, hold the faith, the word of life even in a perverse generation.  That is our responsibility today.  Are we helping those ensnared by Satan, bound by a habit?  The next day Moses saw 2 Hebrews fighting.  He stepped in again to break up the fight.  Paul spoke of divisions in the Corinthians church and said "these things should not be so."  Colossians 3 verse 15 "let the peace of God rule in your hearts."  Are we doing all we can to keep the harmony in the fellowship?  Moses` failure came when he tried to do it himself.  He had it in the back of his mind that the people would understand, that God would deliver them through him but they didn`t understand.  Moses went in with his own strength and ability.  This was the beginning of leading the people out surely?  Moses` failure was because he tried to do it himself.  The timing was not for another 40 years.  We need to be careful that we are not trying to do God`s work in our own strength.  The bible says it is "not by might nor by power but by my spirit saith the Lord of hosts." (Zechariah 4 verse 6)  Remember how Peter lifted up his sword and cut off the ear of the servant of the high priest in the Garden of Gethsemane.  Jesus told him to put away his sword as this was not the way he had planned to do things.  Maybe there is someone we know not saved, we are trying to do our best in the situation but we need to stop trying to give God a helping hand, live in God`s timing.  God could have used Moses in Pharaoh`s palace for the next 40 years but it was not what Moses wanted.

Moses fleeing.  "Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses.  But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh."  "The fear of man bringeth a snare" (Proverbs 29 verse 25)  Moses` secret was out.  Someone had seen him murdering the Egyptian.  For the next 40 years of his life he stayed in the desert.  God had to use those 40 years to prepare him for the future.  Is God working in your life today?  Is he changing your future today?  Don`t try to do it in your own strength.  Maybe you are fleeing today.  You look back and see how you failed God and fled from the problem.  Come back to him today.  God is saying he is waiting at the burning bush just for you.

How often would I have gathered you ... and you would not ...

LIMAVADY INDEPENDENT METHODIST CHURCH

SERMON NOTES FROM SUNDAY 16 AUGUST 2020 pm

MATTHEW 23 VERSES 37 – 39

The Lord in this passage is looking over Jerusalem.  His heart is grieved for what was about to take place on that city.  The Lord is the Lord of the second chance.  Maybe tonight someone is listening – you have rejected the Lord the first time, even the second time and perhaps even now a third time.  The Lord is a God of grace and he comes afresh to you once more tonight.

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings and ye would not!”

This verse reveals a great promise.  “Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”  God is saying “I would have gathered you from all danger, you would have found safety with me.”  That is your promise tonight.  That is why Jesus left heaven, left the praise of the angels behind him, to come into this world to die for your sins and my sins.  In Genesis 3 when Adam sinned and rebelled against God that sin came into every living person.  If you are not saved you are still in that condition.  A broken relationship with the Lord.  That promise is for the young and old, for the rich and the poor.  When I go back into the wilderness in the Old Testament and see how the children of Israel were bitten by serpents and died as a result.  Moses was instructed to make a brazen serpent and everyone who looked to that serpent would cure them.  Just one look.  Think of the woman in the New Testament with the ailment for 12 years.  She had tried every doctor.  Just as Jesus passed by she touched the hem and she was immediately healed.  Have you heard the call of the Lord on your soul?  Have you sat under the gospel being preached and when the invitation came you have turned your back and rejected Christ?  The Lord comes again and gives you another opportunity to respond to his call.  Maybe the Lord is giving you your final opportunity.

There is a symbol here of patience.  The text says “how often”.  After 40 years of tending the sheep in the wilderness Moses had that failure in the back of his mind but God comes again in the burning bush.  Maybe there is a failure in your life.  You have grown cold but the Lord comes afresh tonight.  In Mark 16 verse 7 when Jesus rose again he told the disciples to make sure Peter knew, even after 3 rejections.  In Mark 6 verse 3 after Jesus had taught in the synagogue, the people asked “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James and Joses and of Judah and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.”  In Luke 4 verses 28 and 29 we read that the people in the synagogue were filled with wrath when they heard Jesus, so much so that they cast Jesus out of the city and led him to the brow of a hill to cast him down.  Jesus continued to persevere, he wanted to win them for himself.  If the record is kept in heaven of how often the Lord has spoken to you, every time you have heard the invitation coming afresh but you dug in.  In Revelation 3 verse 20 the patience of the Lord is evident.  He is pleading, knocking at your hearts door.  He wants to come in.  Maybe the door is still firmly closed.  He waits for you to open it from the inside and let him in.  Would you acknowledge you need the Saviour, the one who died for your sins.  In Acts 9 we read of Saul of Tarsus and how the Lord spoke to him as he travelled, brought him to his knees.  Saul asked “who art thou Lord.”  The Lord replied “I am Jesus whom thou persecutest, it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.”  He was using a farming illustration.  It was the picture of a farmer out ploughing.  The farmer had in his hand a stick with pins on the end.  It was used to prod the animals to keep on ploughing. The animals would kick back every time they were prodded.  Just like that Saul had kicked back every time God had spoken to him.  He refused to listen.

The text reveals the problem.  “I have given you every opportunity, what has stopped you listening to me?”  Your stubborn will has stopped you.  The rich young ruler wouldn’t come, not that he couldn’t come.  The thief on the cross asked to be remembered when Jesus came into his kingdom.  What stops you getting saved?  It comes to a decision.  Remember the rich man and the poor man Lazarus in the gospels.  When the poor man Lazarus died he was carried into the heavens by the angels.  He was saved by the grace of God.  The rich man in hell opened up his eyes, lost for eternity.  Balaam said “let me die the death of the righteous.”  Paul said “it is absent from the body and present with the Lord.”

This text reveals a great error.  Some 40 years later Jerusalem was overrun by the enemy and the temple pulled apart.  This is an opportunity God has given to you.  Rejection follows judgment.  “It is appointed unto man once to die and after this the judgment.”  The Lord has taken that judgment on himself.  He offers you a free pardon.  It means repenting and turning from your sin.  Come and trust the Lord with all your heart and believe in him.

Cometh the day, cometh the man

LIMAVADY INDEPENDENT METHODIST CHURCH

SERMON NOTES FROM SUNDAY 16 AUGUST 2020

EXODUS 10 VERSES 1 – 11

We are thinking today of the life of Moses – “cometh the day cometh the man”.  That is what God did here in Egypt, in the nation of Israel.  We are particularly thinking of the work of God in general, that which brings us here on Sunday mornings and Sunday evenings.  The scope of the work.  As Moses went down into Egypt what was on his mind?  He had instructions from the Lord to bring the children of Israel out.  It was not the intellect of Moses alone or persuasive arguments but the work of God alone.  When Moses went in to face Pharaoh he was told to go but asked who he would take – verse 9 “we will go with our young and with our old and with our sons and with our daughters, with our flocks and with our herds will we go.”  Deliverance was for everyone.  The gospel of saving grace today is for each and everyone.  You can have confidence to come here today, that we have a God in heaven who is able to save all who will come unto him.  He is able to save.

The cause that Moses was directed in.  His life would take on a new meaning.  Maybe your life is going to take on a new course.  God will redirect you today, change your direction in life.  Here was Moses – his past experience in Egypt, adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter.  Moses wept when she opened the basket (Exodus 2 verse 6). She picked him up and brought him into her household.  He was educated in all the best education.  One day he forfeited all that and turned his back on the palace.  He had to follow after God.  Maybe you have done similarly with the gospel of God, turned your back on him.  Moses had one major decision to make.  He turned his back on all he had to follow after God.  In Acts 7 when Stephen gave the history of the Children of Israel said in verse 18 “another king arose that did not know Joseph.”   He put his finger on it.  Verse 20 “in which time Moses was born.”  Maybe there is a situation arising for you that God wants to see you through.  Think of Esther.  Chosen to be the wife of the king.  She did not know what she would face in the coming days.  Mordecai her uncle heard of a plan to kill all the Jews on a certain day.  Esther was the queen, in a certain role and position.  God would use this position.  Mordecai explained the situation to her.  She could be the one who could redirect things.  “How do you know but maybe you are the person brought to the kingdom for such a time as this.”  Are you dedicated to Christ today?  Do you love him with your heart and soul?  When you see Christ hanging on the cross, paying your price and mine, suffering for your shame and mine – is your life following wholly after him?  Are these drive-ins for such a time as this?  Maybe you are open for such a time as this?  Moses saw an Egyptian and a Hebrew fighting together.”  Moses stepped in and killed the Egyptian. The following day he saw 2 Hebrews fighting together.  One asked him “are you going to do what you did to the Egyptian?”  “For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them but they understood not.”(Acts 7 verse 25)  Moses tried to move 40 years before God wanted him to move.  We might get an opportunity that might disappear very suddenly.  Be careful of God’s timing.  Are you and I keeping our heart and mind open to the will of God today?  For 40 years he has been a shepherd in the wilderness and he never saw a bush burning like this one he came across one day.  God was redirecting his life.  Maybe there are things happening in your life that you have never seen or thought of before.  God gave Moses a task – to go into enemy territory.  Exodus 5 verse 1 “and afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh ‘thus saith the Lord God of Israel Let my people go that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness’.  Pharaoh replied “who is the Lord that I should obey his voice to let Israel go?  I know not the Lord neither will I let Israel go.”  Maybe God is giving you a task today.  You are not sure what will happen if you follow the Lord’s leading.  Moses said to the Lord “maybe the people will not listen to me, they will reject me and my message.”  God is calling us not for an easy ride.  You are in for a surprise.  It will be a difficult task.  We will be called in our different spheres to win men and women to Christ.  The devil is like Pharaoh, he will not let his people go.  He will not let those people come to Christ today.  Imagine Moses watching that bush when God spoke to him.  He has to leave that tranquil place to step into Pharaoh’s palace.  It must have been wonderful to hear the voice of God.  Will we be able to pass on to our next generation what God has done in our lives in a day yet to come?  God has called us to a service that is difficult but it is our responsibility today.

The call that he was devoted to.  God redirected Moses.  He was a shepherd but God made him a mighty man in his army.  God can take you today, use us as a mighty object in his hand for the salvation of precious souls.  You and I have to surrender ourselves to God, to his will and dedicate ourselves to go.  Moses was reluctant to go but he was devoted to the call of God.  Moses told Pharaoh that every man and woman, old and young would leave Egypt.  Will you surrender all to God today?  Maybe God will redirect your path today just as he did Moses that day before Pharaoh.

Tuesday Night Prayer Meeting Notes

BIBLE STUDY – TUESDAY 11 AUGUST 2020

PSALM 103 VERSES 1 – 5

“Bless the Lord O my soul; and all that is within me, bless his holy name.  Bless the Lord O my soul and forget not all his benefits; Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagles.”

David in these verses calls to his soul to arise and praise, it is as if he has awakened from sleep.

Psalm 92 verse 1 “It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High.”

The apostle Paul reminds us as we come to prayer:

Philippians 4 verse 6 “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.”

Let’s tonight as we pray take time to reflect and thank God for what He has done for us

1.     His compassion – verse 3 God’s forgiveness.  Where might we be tonight if not for God’s pardoning grace.  As they nailed Christ to the cross he cried “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”  He pardons ALL that will come to God by Him.  Jesus says “him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.”

2.    His concerns – verse 3 He healeth all our diseases.  We see here God’s pardon but now also we see his great power to heal the body.  The centurion came to Jesus about a friend who was sick.  Jesus was concerned about him and said He would come and heal.  The centurion said that I am not worthy that you should come under my roof, but speak the word only and my servant shall be healed.  Jesus spoke and it was done.

3.    His crowning – verse 4 He redeems our lives, saves us from eternal destruction and he crowns our lives with loving kindness every day.  Psalm 23 “surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  Revelation 1 verse 6 “He has made us Kings and Priests.”  An appointment only God can make and an office only He can give.

4.    His contentment – verse 5 He satisfies.  “Now none but Christ can satisfy, none other name for me.”  Paul came to that place in his life of full surrender to God that he could say in  Philippians 4 “Not that I speak in respect of want for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am therewith to be content.”

5.    His consolation – verse 5 He sustains us even in old age, none are cast off.  Moses at 80 years of age was sent of God to Egypt to rescue the children of Israel.  Joshua 15 verse 11 Caleb puts his strength and vision down to the hand of God.  “I was 40 when God gave me the promise of land and I have kept that promise in my soul ever since, now 45 years later.”  Joshua 14 verse 12 “Give me this mountain.”

Let’s take time tonight to reflect on our God tonight and his wonderful benefits.

BIBLE STUDY – TUESDAY 4 AUGUST 2020

ACTS 16 VERSES 35 – 40

“And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying Let those men go.  And the keeper of the prison told this saying to Paul, The magistrates have sent to let you go; now therefore depart and go in peace.  But Paul said unto them, They have beaten us openly uncondemned, being Romans, and have cast us into prison; and now do they thrust us out privily? Nay verily; but let them come themselves and fetch us out.  And the serjeants told these words unto the magistrates; and they feared, when they heard that they were Romans.  And they came and besought them, and brought them out, and desired them to depart out of the city.  And they went out of the prison, and entered into the house of Lydia and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them and departed.”

We have followed Paul to the city of Philippi and have seen his work in that city and now we want to look as he leaves.  We have seen the souls saved during his stay and we have seen his suffering and pain and imprisonment also.  Paul’s mind is on the fellowship in this city as he leaves.

1.     The witness of the fellowship.  Verse 35 the magistrates on hearing that Paul was a Roman citizen and the treatment he received was wrong wanted Paul to leave the city quietly.  They sent word to let them out of jail.  Paul refused to go until the magistrates would come down themselves and release them.  Paul perhaps felt that if he was to leave under such circumstances then it would throw a shadow over their character which would in turn reflect badly on the church.  Our lives should always reflect well and bare a good witness for the church of Jesus Christ.  1 Timothy 4 verse 12 “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

2.    The work of the fellowship.  Verse 40 Paul is leaving but the work will and must continue.  He encourages the brethren.  In the little book of Jude we find there advice in difficult times, the advice there was to stay together, worship and pray together.  Jude 1 verse 20 “But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.”  Paul couldn’t just walk away because he wanted to see the work grow and others reached.  He wanted to encourage the believers to get involved in reaching out and striving to see souls saved.  The work of God is not just in one man but the church reaching out.  The man might leave but the work continues.

3.    The welfare of the fellowship.  Paul perhaps felt that his presence in the city might cause problems for the little fledgling church and it was now time for him to leave.  Paul had the welfare of the fellowship on his mind.  Paul had to leave the little church of Thessalonica in a hurry when the crowd turned against him, but the welfare of that little fellowship was much on his mind, he wrote 1 Thessalonians 3 verse 10 “Night and day praying exceedingly that we might see your face, and might perfect that which is lacking in your faith?”  Making every effort to see them, but 1 Thessalonians 2 verse 18 “Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us.”

BIBLE STUDY – TUESDAY 28 JULY 2020

ACTS 18 verses 11 – 24

“Therefore loosing from Troas, we came with a straight course to Samothracia and the next day to Neapolis.  And from thence to Philippi which is the chief city of that part of Macedonia and a colony and we were in that city abiding certain days.  And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made, and we sat down and spake unto the women which resorted thither.  And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God; heard us, whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.  And when she was baptized, and her household, she besought us, saying, If ye have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house and abide there.  And she constrained us.  And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying.  The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.  And this did she many days.  But Paul being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.  And he came out the same hour.  And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers.  And brought them to the magistrates, saying, These men, being Jews, do exceedingly trouble our city.  And teach customs, which are not lawful for us to receive, neither to observe, being Romans.  Ad the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates rent off their clothes, and commanded to beat them.  And when they had laid many stripes upon them, they cast them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely.  Who having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.”

Paul has been waiting on guidance from the Lord, that guidance came by the way of a vision of a man from Macedonia waving to Paul, “come over into Macedonia and help us.”  Verse 10 we see them depart in obedience to this call taking it as the will of God for their lives to do so.  God it would seem to them had opened a door into Europe for the gospel.

1.     Their arrival – verse 12 Samothracia, Neapolis then Philippi, the chief city of Macedonia.  There was no large crowd awaiting Paul, no fanfares, no presidential greetings, no red carpet.  Paul after a few days in the city went out to a little prayer meeting where a few womenfolk met to pray.  We might say any interest in the gospel was very low key.  However Paul knew he was there in God`s will to do God`s work.  Perhaps where God has placed you or me, we might feel there is no recognition, we might feel we are overlooked and the things we do doesn`t really matter.  There may be no great events, no blowing of trumpets in celebration of what we do, but God knows.  2 Kings 5 we read there of the healing of Naaman, a mighty and well respected soldier of his nation, but he was a leper.  In his house was a wee maid, not even named but God used that wee maid to see Naaman delivered of this awful plight.

2.    Their attention given – the devil knew all about Paul’s arrival and his ministry and he sought to do all that he could to disrupt the gospel course.  Verse 16 “a certain damsel” followed them drawing attention to what Paul was preaching.  This young girl was demon possessed and Paul would not allow the devil to use her against the gospel so in the name of Jesus Christ Paul was able to cast that demon out.  Satan will do all in his power to oppose you as you try to serve the Lord.  Nehemiah 2 verse 10 it was said of Nehemiah in his day coming to Jerusalem, that the enemy knew a man had come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.

3.    Their arrest – verses 19 – 24 Paul found himself in trouble and arrested for delivering this young girl of the spirit of divination.  This young girl was being used by others to earn them money and now she was of no value to them they were angry.  Paul was arrested and beaten and cast into prison.  Things might not always go as we think they should.  As Christians sometimes we suffer as we serve the Lord.  1 Peter 3 verse 17 “For it is better if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.  Even in prison Paul was used to bring the jailer and his family to Christ for salvation.  In our service let us, as Paul says, do it: Ephesians 6 verse 6 “Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.”

PRAYER POINTS:

·         Pray for those of our fellowship that have been bereaved in the past week.

·         Pray for those who are not able to join us in our services.

·         Pray that God will move and save souls in these days.

BIBLE STUDY – TUESDAY 21 JULY 2020

ACTS 16 VERSES 6 – 10

“Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia; and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia.  After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia; but the Spirit suffered them not.  And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.  And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia and prayed him, saying Come over into Macedonia and help us.  And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia; assuredly gathering that the Lord had called for us to preach the gospel unto them.”

Last week we left Paul looking at an open door.  He had waited and watched as God had seemed to close doors before him into Asia and Bithynia then the door into a new field of service opened for him.  From this take notice:

1.     The clarity Paul got.  Verse 10 After he had seen the vision.  Paul eager to find the will of God in this instance was given great clarity.  Nothing was left to chance.  Paul was given clarity as to what he should do and where he should go.  God will give us leading and clarity in the way we should go if we wait on him.

2.    The course that was set.  Verse 10 immediately we endeavoured to go.  God set the course through the man’s plea in the vision to Paul, come over and help us.  Acts chapter 8 we read of Philip and the course that was set for him and the gospel.  God showed him that he was to go toward the south, down a desert way, there he would meet a man seeking for salvation.  Philip didn`t know this of course, he just obeyed and followed the instructions, God makes no mistakes.  We need to keep our eyes on the course that God sets for us.

3.    The confidence he enjoyed.  Verse 10 assuredly knowing that the Lord had called us.  They went with the assurance in their hearts that this was the Lord`s doing.  The route was patiently sought out, then obeyed and blessing followed.  We need to wait patiently for the Lord and His leading in these days of uncertainty and he will not fail.

PRAYER POINTS:

·         Continue to pray for the great need of our land.  We need a mighty outpouring of God’s Holy Spirit in these days.

·         Pray for those in our fellowship who can’t join with us.

·         Pray for our Sunday Drive In service again this Sunday.

As we go into our time of prayer this evening, let us be mindful of the leading of the Lord in these days of uncertainty, we do not want to be hasty in any of our decisions and actions.

Let us notice here:

1.     God’s objective – It is God’s objective to have the gospel preached throughout the world and in so doing he desires to use the church, you and me.  This is the Great Commission, “go ye into all the world and preach the gospel” – Mark 16 verse 16.  God called Paul for this very reason.  We see in the call, Acts 13 verse 2 “Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.”  Then we see Paul’s testimony.  1 Corinthians 1 verse 17 “For Christ sent me not to baptize but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

2.    God’s obstacles – Paul’s own intuition was to preach the gospel in Asia, but the Holy Ghost prevented that route, then Paul thought he would go to Bithynia but again he felt the door closing.  These were God’s obstacles and that’s where we need to take care.  God closes doors also.  There are times when Satan throws obstacles in our way and we need discernment to recognise when God is leading.  Paul writing to the Thessalonian church and speaking of how he longed to come to them said 1 Thessalonians 2 verse 18 “Wherefore we would have come unto you, even I Paul; once and again, but Satan hindered us.”  Whereas n Romans 1 Paul says “oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto).”  Sometimes God says NO to our well thought plans, we need to be able to recognise the difference.

3.    God’s opportunity – God opens the door for Paul.  He will have Paul go into Asia and  Bithynia but not at this particular time.  Verse 9 God brings before Paul the vision of the man from Macedonia pleading come over and help us.  Paul says 1 Corinthians 16 verse 9 “For a great door and effectual is opened unto me.”  Paul went through the door that God opened and had a fruitful ministry.  Acts 16 verse 10 “And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavoured to go into Macedonia, assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.”  These are days of uncertainty, but we can be certain of one fact, God is in control and wishes to lead us.  Let’s keep looking to Him as new opportunities arise.

Once again keep in mind the prayer requests for those who need our prayers.  Pray as the lockdown is eased in many areas that we might not see a spike in this virus.

NEHEMIAH 2 VERSE 17 – 20

“Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire; come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.  Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me.  And they said, Let us rise up and build.  So they strengthened their hands for this good work.  But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn and despised us and said What is this thing that ye do? Will ye rebel against the king?  Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial in Jerusalem.”

The Work of God.  We see this building program going on in Jerusalem.

1.     Vision for the work.  When this great leader Nehemiah heard of the conditions in Jerusalem, he heard of how the people who had returned from captivity in Babylon were in affliction, he heard of how the walls of the city were broken down and the gates of the city were burned.  His reaction is recorded in his own words.  Nehemiah 1 verse 4 “And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven.  God sent him forth to rebuild.  These are difficult days, but we need to keep focused on the building program of God, the building of God’s church in the midst of very different times.

2.    The voice for God’s work.  Verse 18 Nehemiah now shares with the people this vision for the work.  Verse 17 ye see the distress that WE are in.  Verse 18 then he tells them of how God has placed this vision in his heart.  Chapters 2 verses 8 and 9 no doubt testifies to how God provided for him, and how God has paved the way for him to come.  He told them of how God touched the king’s heart and granted him permission to come and lead this work.  He tells them of how the King provided timber for the building and had given an armed escort for him.  In hearing this news, the people with one accord and one voice said – “let us rise up and build” chapter 2 verse 18.

3.    The value of the work.  Verse 18 a good work.  What value do we place upon the work of God and just as importantly what value do we place upon our role in that work?  To this people this was a good work, to Nehemiah himself it was a GREAT work.  Nehemiah 6 verse 3 “I am doing a great work.”  It’s a great work reaching men and women, boys and girls with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  To tell people of how Jesus loves them and died to save them and to see them added to the church of Jesus Christ.  Let’s keep focused and building, your input is so valuable and necessary in that work.

·         Let’s pray for our land that God again would send a mighty revival

·         Pray for those in our fellowship that are unwell, pray for those in hospital and those just out of hospital.

·         Continue to pray for all the frontline workers still battling Coronavirus

·         Pray for our Drive In Services again this Sunday 11.30 and 7.30 pm

BIBLE STUDY – TUESDAY 30 JUNE 2020

Nehemiah 2 verses 17 - 20

Nehemiah is a man on a God given mission.  Nehemiah 2 verse 12 we read how God put this work into his heart.  Verse 18 “then I told them of the hand of my God which was upon me.”

1.     A mission of challenge – Nehemiah 2 verse 17 “Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire; come and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach.”  This work came as a challenge to the people of Jerusalem, LET US build the wall.  After the return of the people from Babylon complacency had set in and the repair work had stopped.  The city was in ruins, the walls were broken down, the gates of that city had been burned and the people were in despair.  God sent a man with a challenge to rebuild.  With shops and businesses reopening after the lockdown we hear much of the challenge to rebuild our economy.  That economy has been under pressure these past few months.  There is a challenge tonight in the spiritual also.  You and I as God’s people need to recognise the damage that has been done through sin.  There is a call tonight to rebuild the walls that have been broken down over the years.

2.    A mission that demands co-operation.  Verse 18 we see the response of the people to this clear call and challenge, the people didn’t shy away from it.  They knew this was a gigantic task but with one accord they answered the challenge.  And they said, “Let us rise up and build.”  This wasn’t a task for one man, this was a work for all.  Every man that day consented to God’s will and to the work.  1 Corinthians 12 Paul speaks of the need for harmony and unity in the work of God.  Paul likened the church to a body, a body like the human body consisting of the individual limbs, arms, legs, hands, eyes and for the body to work effectively all the limbs must work together.  Every limb is important in the functioning of that body and one relies upon the other.  You and I in the work of God must work together in unity and harmony for the furtherance of the kingdom of God.

3.    A mission that demands courage.  Verse 18 “so they strengthened their hands for this good work.”  They made that day a resolve that they would set about and continue to do this great work for God’s glory.  The enemy continually threatened them and tries to discourage them and that is why they needed courage.  Let’s you and I tonight join with one another in the place of prayer and set about to build God’s Kingdom, every one of us doing our little task.

·         Pray for one another tonight in the work of God

·         Pray for those again on the front line

·         Pray for those in our fellowship that are no longer able to be with us in the meetings but we do not forget them.

·         Pray for the sick and for the families bereaved in these past days.

PSALM 40

“I waited patiently for the Lord and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.  He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, many shall see it and fear and shall trust in the Lord.  Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust and respecteth not the proud, nor such as turn aside to lies.  Many, O Lord my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done and thy thoughts which are to us-ward; they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee; if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.  Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears has thou opened; burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.  Then said I, Lo, I come in the volume of the book it is written of me.  I delight to do thy will, O my God; yea, thy law is within my heart.  I have preached righteousness in the great congregation; lo, I have not refrained my lips, O lord thou knowest.  I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation; I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation.  Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.  For innumerable evils have compassed me about mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head; therefore my heart faileth me.  Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me, O Lord make haste to help me.  Let them be ashamed and confounded together that seek after my soul to destroy it, let them be driven backward and put to shame that wish me evil.  Let them be desolate for a reward of their shame that say unto me, Aha, aha.  Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, the Lord be magnified.  But I am poor and needy, yet the Lord thinketh upon me; thou art my help and my deliverer; make no tarrying O my God.”

Good advice for today.

The Psalmist here in Psalm No 40 offers very timely advice even for us in 2020.

Following the good news of the easing of restrictions regarding churches reopening it is wise to be careful and to tread cautiously. After some thirteen weeks of lockdown and not being able to meet as we did, it is natural to grow impatient.

The Psalmist here speaks of Patience.

Psalm 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

[1] Exercise of Patience.  David here was willing to exercise patience, not just merely to wish for it.  He tells us here he waited, and he waited patiently. Day after day calling upon the Lord, maybe at times feeling as if he wasn’t heard or no one listening, but still he waited.  V2 David explains the situation he was in was like being in a horrible pit, almost drowning in desperation.

Yet he waited with patience knowing that the Lord would answer his plea.  Moses was raised in Pharaoh’s household. He was called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. He was there that he might deliver the Children of Israel from Egypt but sadly he moved before God’s time.  As we pray, not only tonight, but in our own quiet time let us exercise patience knowing that the Lord will answer, and in His time we might safely gather again to worship as we once did.

[2] Example in Patience.  “I waited patiently for the Lord.”  It was to the Lord that David waited for. He never lost sight of the Lord through this terrible situation.  David wasn’t looking to any other source, he didn’t look to any outside body, he looked and waited for the Lord.

It is good to hear news from the government and the officials when they say churches can reopen, but for you and me today as believers, lets keep praying and waiting for the Lord and His instructions as to what we should do.  Psalm 121 my help cometh from the Lord.

[3] Encouragement for his Patience.  The Lord heard his cry, his patient cry.  Psalm 40:2 “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings.”  Psa 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.   The Lord lifted him out of that trouble, gave him a sure foundation, granted him guidance and direction in his life, put joy in his heart and gave him a wonderful testimony to live before others.  Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

2 Timothy chapter 4 verse 16 “At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me; I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.”

Paul is describing to Timothy who of course was a young pastor about an experience he was going through. A time when he was arrested, and his friends forsook him. This of course was to encourage Timothy and to show him that we have a God who never forsakes us and never leaves us alone.

Paul speaks of

[1] Paul’s Plight.  Verse 16 “all men forsook me”.   This of course was during a time of arrest and imprisonment when no one stood by him to offer support. This surely must have been a very lonely time.  Paul must have missed the fellowship and the friendship when things changed so quickly for him.  Things changed so quickly for the church in these past days, we no longer can enjoy one another’s company and friendship and maybe we feel forsaken.

[2] the Presence he felt.  Verse 17 “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me,”  Paul was so aware that the Lord was standing by in the absence of his friends.  Jesus is the friend that sticketh closer than a brother.  When Daniel was cast into the lions den, he was aware that the Lord had not forgotten nor did He miss what had happened, the Lord has sent His angel to close the lions mouths.  As we miss one another in fellowship and prayer we know that the Lord stands by us.

[3] the Peace that brought.  Verse 17 “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me “  verse 16 “let it not be laid to their charge”  Paul had a peace about the situation. He wasn’t angry nor sought revenge but was at peace.

Even in the prison house Paul had a great peace, he could write in his letter to the Philippians that “the things which have happened to me have fallen out for the furtherance of the Gospel.”  Paul had a peace to know that God was in control and knew exactly what he needed.  God knows all about you and me tonight, He knows about our circumstances and situation and He has all in His control.

[4] the Power he realised.  It was in this situation, a time of loneliness that Paul realised the Power of God helping him.  2 Timothy 4 verse 17 “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.”  You and can be assured tonight when we feel at our weakest then we can be strong through God’s Almighty Power working in us and through us for His Glory and Honour.

·         Continue to pray for God guidance and help in this pandemic.

·         Pray for those at greatest risk. Pray for those who are cut off and laid aside.

·         Pray for our Drive Ins each Sunday and that God will save souls.

Romans chapter 1 verse 8-15

“First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.  For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers.  Making request, if by any means now at length, I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.  For I long to see you that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established.  That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.  Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.  I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians, both to the wise and to the unwise.  So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.”

Pauls Prayer of Concern for the absent church.  We see the heart of this child of God burning for those he was absent from. Distance did not deter him

[1] Paul’s Commendation of them.  Verse 8 “That without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers; “  He may be absent from them but they are very much on his heart, we may be absent from each other in the fellowship but we need to remember one another.”  Romans 1 verse 8  First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.” Paul prays for them all, that’s important, for Paul realised the importance of each and every believer in the fellowship. Some might be saved longer than others, some may be more knowledgeable in the scriptures, but all are equal in the eyes of God.  Romans 1 verse 12 Paul speaks of “the mutual faith both of you and me.”   Paul recognized the equality of all---it was faith in the Lord Jesus Christ that had saved him and them.

[2] Paul’s Channel of prayer.  Verse 8 “First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all,”  Paul’s channel for prayer is the same for us, through the Lord Jesus Christ we come to our Heavenly Father.  1 Timothy 2 verse 5 “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”  We have one channel tonight and that is The Lord Jesus Christ. Let Him hear our voice tonight as we come together to pray for others.

[3] Paul’s Comfort in prayer.  I think this is very appropriate tonight for us to pray as a church, there was a day that Paul was praying specifically for, a day that he was looking forward to.  Romans 1 verse 11 “For I long to see you,”Paul looked forward to the day when he would join with them in the work set before them.  We look forward to the day when we can come together, our Drive In’s are good we can see one another but won’t it be nice when we can sit again beside each other and pray one for another.

[4] Paul’s Challenge in prayer.  To see the Work going on.  That was the reason that Paul desired their company, Romans 1 verse 15 “So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.”

Let us remember the work that God has called us to and the responsibility that we have in that work. Let us tonight pray for souls to be saved, remember those unwell and cannot meet as they once did, pray for the Drive Ins and pray for the move of God that we long for and need in our Land.Top of Form

BIBLE STUDY – TUESDAY 2 JUNE 2020

1st Samuel chapter 1

Hannah’s prayer.

Hannah had no children and this caused her great distress as she comes under ridicule from those in her house.  Hannah made her way to the Temple, to where she would trust the Lord to meet with her and hear her prayer.   As we see Hannah approach the Lord bringing her great problems to Him.

[1] Hannah’s Sincerity.  Hannah came to the Lord in sincerity, believing that the One she came to was well able to do far more than she could ever ask or think.  So she got before the Lord and cried to Him in her despair.  1 Samuel 1 verse 10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the LORD, and wept sore.   She was bringing a problem to the Lord that she could no longer carry nor do anything about.

[2] Hannah’s Simplicity.  1 Samuel 1 verse 11 “And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come  upon his head.”   She just cried Lord hear me, Lord grant my prayer, give me a man child.  She was simple in her language and was direct.

[3] Hannah’s Success.  “and the LORD remembered her.”   1 Samuel 1 verse 20 “Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the LORD.”   The Lord heard the sincerity of her prayer and the simplicity as she asked in faith and the Lord heard her and answered prayer.
